Plaster Casts
The plaster casts represent one of the most striking features of Pompeii. As early as 1823, Antonio Bonucci, then director of the Pompeii excavations, reported the cavity of the remains of a door in the ash. However, it was not until 1856 that the concept of creating a cast of it using plaster was proposed.
After becoming the director of the archaeological site, Giuseppe Fiorelli decided to test the same method on human remains between February 2 and 5, 1863. He poured a mixture of plaster and water into the ‘void’ left by the decomposed body of one of Pompeii’s numerous victims and waited for the mixture to harden. Subsequently, the first plaster cast of a human body in Pompeii was revealed.
