Why is our Herculaneum tour so unique ?

Preserved beneath layers of mud that encased buildings, artifacts, and organic materials like food and wood, Herculaneum remains remarkably well-intact. This unique preservation is one of the most striking aspects that visitors experience as they stroll through its streets. The discovery of wooden items, including a screw-press in a laundry room, stairs, beams, and other structures, is truly astounding. Archaeologists and historians universally acknowledge that Herculaneum is far better preserved than Pompeii. In many cases, entire upper floors of buildings have survived, and in certain parts of the town, even the underground sewage systems beneath the streets remain fully intact. Near what was once Herculaneum’s beach lie the skeletons of men, women and children who tragically perished during the eruption. It is impossible to leave the site without feeling deeply moved by the suffering endured by its inhabitants.

A brief overview of Herculaneum:

Herculaneum, an ancient Roman city located near Pompeii in the Bay of Naples, met its tragic end in 79 AD when pyroclastic flows from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius buried it completely. Compared to Pompeii, Herculaneum experienced less accumulation of ash and pumice stones during the initial stages of the eruption. However, this was followed by pyroclastic surges that engulfed the town in a thick layer of mud, which eventually hardened into rock. For centuries, the city remained forgotten until the 18th century, when during Austrian rule, a farmer, Ambrogio Nocerino, stumbled upon the ancient theater by chance. However, systematic excavations only began later in 1738 under the direction of Charles of Bourbon, (the) King of Naples. Despite ongoing efforts, only about a quarter of Herculaneum has been uncovered to this day. In 1980, routine maintenance work led to a remarkable discovery near the seashore: over 350 intact skeletons alongside a wooden boat. This tragic scene revealed that these individuals had been seeking refuge along the shoreline when they were overtaken by a deadly cloud of toxic gas at a temperature of around 400 degrees Celsius (approximately 750 degrees Fahrenheit), sealing their fate in an instant.

How a private, expert tour adds value

  • Customization: Your itinerary is tailored to your interests, pace, and needs, meaning you don’t waste time on things that don’t interest you.
  • Expertise and authenticity: An expert guide provides in-depth local knowledge, shares personal stories, and offers cultural immersion beyond what a standard guide can provide.
  • Personalized attention: You have a dedicated guide who can answer all your questions and adjust the tour  on the spot to explore hidden gems or spend more time at your favorite sites.
  • Convenience and efficiency: You can be picked up from your hotel, and the guide handles logistics such as tickets and timing, allowing you to avoid lines and have a stress-free experience.
  • Flexibility and pace: You set the pace, ensuring you are never rushed and have time to absorb what you’re seeing.
  • Intimacy: A private tour provides a quieter, more intimate environment where you can have meaningful conversations and a more personal connection with the place you are visiting.
