What makes this tour special?
This tour offers a unique opportunity to dedicate four hours to exploring an extraordinary archaeological site, providing access to notable areas recently unearthed, including the “House of Leda and the Swan” and the newly discovered “thermopolium” in Regio V. Additionally, the itinerary includes a visit to the “House of the Chaste Lovers”, the “House of the Painters at Work” in Regio IX, and the “Insula Meridionalis”, all of which are active excavation sites.
Engaging with an archaeologist or art historian for three hours, followed by an exclusive one-hour visit to a restricted excavation area in Pompeii, accompanied by detailed insights from a scholar associated with the Superintendency, provides an exceptional and enriching experience.
The Superintendency of Pompeii offers access to the “Insula Meridionalis” of Pompeii to a maximum of 15 people per day. This is an excavation area that is being systematically uncovered to better understand the progress of the investigations. One of the Superintendency’s academics will explain the latest discoveries in Italian, and your archaeologist (or art historian) will translate into English.
Your private guide will spend the whole day by your side, organizing everything (purchase of entrance tickets to archaeological sites, timing, break for a snack, etc.).

More Details about this tour:
Meet your private English-speaking guide, a professional archaeologist (or art historian), near the Sgambati Bar, located close to the “Porta Marina Superiore” entrance in Pompeii. Your guide will be waiting for you, holding a sign with your name for easy recognition. Together, you’ll embark on an engaging four-hour exploration of Pompeii’s historic wonders. During the tour, you will have the chance to enter ongoing archaeological digs normally closed to the public, where an expert from the Pompeii Superintendency will explain current discoveries and preliminary interpretations. The academic expert’s explanation is in Italian, but it will be translated into English by your guide.
“Insula Meridionalis” of Pompeii
The “Insula Meridionalis”, the southern section of Pompeii’s historic urban area, stretches from the “Imperial Villa” in the west to the “Quadriportico dei Teatri” in the east and is presently undergoing consolidation and restoration efforts. This area was not been included in the “Great Pompeii Project” (2012–2023) – European Community funded for restoration work in Pompeii – and therefore required dedicated attention.
Simultaneously, the initiative includes a series of stratigraphic surveys at several locations, which have conclusively confirmed the reoccupation of Pompeii following its destruction in 79 AD when Mt Vesuvius buried the town.
