What makes this tour special?
This tour has been designed to meet the needs of families with children.
The Herculaneum ruins, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, are notably better preserved than those of Pompeii and attract fewer visitors. This makes the site an excellent choice for family outings, especially with kids.
Join us on a journey through the archaeological marvels of Herculaneum, the majestic grandeur of Mount Vesuvius, and the immersive Virtual Museum of Herculaneum. Together with your youngsters, step back in time to the days of ancient Rome. Relive the dramatic final moments of Herculaneum as Mount Vesuvius unleashed its might, engulfing the Roman town in a catastrophic pyroclastic flow.
Why should you choose this tour ?
- This tour has been specifically designed for families with kids.
- Join an expert guide (archaeologist or art historian) on this thoughtfully crafted tour designed to engage both kids and adults on an emotional level. During your visit to the Museum of Herculaneum, you will encounter remarkable virtual reconstructions of the Roman monuments of Herculaneum, vividly depicting the eruption that buried the towns in the area nearly two thousand years ago. A visit to the Herculaneum excavations, along with an immersive experience in the Herculaneum Virtual Museum and a visit to the top of Mount Vesuvius, will allow kids—and adults alike—to fully understand the final years of Herculaneum’s life.
- Wooden objects have also been preserved in Herculaneum, such as a boat, tables, and even a cradle. This helps children gain a deeper understanding of the ancient world as it existed two millennia ago.
More Details about this tour:
Upon arrival at the designated port of call for your ship—whether it be Salerno, Naples, Amalfi, or Sorrento—or at your hotel, you will be greeted by your dedicated driver with a Mercedes Minivan, alongside a professional guide ( a real archaeologist or art historian) at a time of your choosing.
Within approximately 40 to 60 minutes (depending on the departure location) you will arrive at Herculaneum to commence a captivating two-hour guided exploration of the ancient ruins. Following this, the itinerary includes a visit to the Virtual Archaeological Museum, conveniently situated in close proximity to the site of the excavations.
Afterwards, there will be a brief pause to enjoy either a slice of traditional pizza or a refreshing gelato in Herculaneum.
Subsequently, the tour proceeds to Mount Vesuvius. We arrive by minivan up to 1000 meters above sea level and then you are free to to hike slowly along a steep path to reach the summit and to admire the volcano inside. The allocated duration for this segment is approximately 90 minutes.
Finally, guests will be transported back to their cruise ship or accommodation to conclude the day’s enriching experience.
MAV (Virtual Archaeological Museum) of Herculaneum
A brief distance from the remnants of Herculaneum lies MAV, a virtual museum dedicated to the Roman world, recognized as one of the most sophisticated in Italy. This museum provides a virtual and interactive experience that allows visitors to relive the thrill of returning to the moment just before the Plinian eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, which obliterated the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabia. Through stunning scenic reconstructions, guests are transported into a virtual realm, where they can enjoyably and interactively explore the Roman ruins of Herculaneum. The MAV serves as an educational venue where reality and imagination converge, fostering innovative methods of learning and entertainment.
