Pompeii for All
The “Pompeii for All” initiative ensures improved accessibility for everyone visiting the archaeological ruins of Pompeii, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
In most archaeological sites, wheelchair users often encounter numerous architectural barriers. At Pompeii, however, visitors with disabilities can access a significant portion of the site starting from the Amphitheater Gate, allowing them to fully appreciate the complexity and richness of this historic location. Thanks to the efforts of technicians, engineers, and archaeologists, a specially designed, environmentally friendly pathway has been developed to enable wheelchair users to explore many sections of Pompeii. These modifications have been carried out using modern materials and include removable ramps, allowing the site to maintain its historical integrity while improving accessibility.
The wheelchair-accessible path is constructed using a hydraulic lime mixture that contains no cement. Between July and September 2015, Naples University, in partnership with the Pompeii Superintendence, carried out 13 tests to evaluate both the visual impact and mechanical properties of this lime mixture.
Following validation and certification of the material, it was determined that when the new sidewalk is directly connected to archaeological structures, the pavement surface is laid over an iron mesh to prevent potential oxidation reactions. Every aspect of this process is closely monitored by archaeologists and overseen by Pompeii Superintendence.
