Herculaneum and Pompeii: distinctive yet complementary

Herculaneum and Pompeii stand as remarkable examples of Roman cities preserved and almost untouched for two thousand years. Both were engulfed by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD and rediscovered in the eighteenth century. These archaeological treasures provide a unique glimpse into the daily life of ancient Romans.
Herculaneum was encased in a dense pyroclastic surge  –  high-speed flow of gas and solid material (ash and rocks) – allowing the preservation of wooden structures like beds, doors, windows, papyrus scrolls, and numerous other household items. Remarkably preserved and significantly less crowded, Herculaneum offers an unparalleled experience compared to its counterpart.
Conversely, Pompeii was submerged under layers of scorching ash, which incinerated most wooden objects but left behind its famous plaster casts.
Exploring both sites provides a comprehensive understanding of the Roman world that is captivatingly distant yet rich in history and culture.
