More info about this tour:

You’ll meet your guide at the Herculaneum excavations ticket office at a time convenient for you. Your guide will be waiting for you with a signboard with your name written on it. The guided tour will last 2 hours and will show you extraordinary examples of thermal baths, patrician homes, shops and wineries, and much more. The entire town covered approximately 20 hectares (almost 50 acres) in Roman times, of which only 4.5 hectares have been excavated so far. Therefore, our tour will allow you to explore all of Herculaneum’s most iconic monuments.

Victims in Herculaneum

VICTIMS IN THE VAULTED SPACES (FORNICI) OF HERCULANEUM:

What particularly strikes visitors to Herculaneum, especially youngsters, is the presence of numerous escapees found in the vaulted spaces (fornici) facing the ancient beach of Herculaneum.
In 1980, a decision was made to explore a large stretch of the ancient beach that bordered the city. In nine of the twelve archways near the town, used as boathouses or as storage areas for fishermen, the skeletons of approximately 300 people were discovered, having died from thermal shock when the first surge struck Herculaneum. The objects found alongside the victims clearly demonstrate that each had taken with them their most precious possessions: valuable jewelry, bags of coins, piggy banks, and a set of surgical instruments. This is the most significant scene of the terrible tragedy that struck the town almost two thousand years ago.

Why should you choose this tour  ?

  • Your guide will accompany you for two hours on this unforgettable journey, offering engaging commentary and intriguing insights into the history of Herculaneum.
  • Wooden objects have also been preserved in Herculaneum (such as: doors, a boat, oars, tables, and even a cradle) and this helps your kids better understand the ancient world of two thousand years ago.
  • Join an expert archaeological guide on this carefully planned tour, designed to captivate both kids and adults. During your visit to the ruins of Herculaneum, you’ll admire several two-storied buildings that vividly depict an ancient Roman city from nearly two thousand years ago. This truly immersive experience will make your guided tour even more engaging and exciting.
