WHY IS OUR FIVE-HOUR GUIDED TOUR OF POMPEII SO UNIQUE ?
Spanning 44 hectares (approximately 109 acres), Pompei has long been a prominent archaeological site. However, its management historically faced significant challenges, including unreliable oversight, insufficient personnel, and a lack of transparency, which often left many streets entirely closed off to visitors without explanation. Additionally, inadequate funding contributed to the deterioration of the site,, with numerous Roman structures falling into a state of disrepair. A major change occurred in 2012, when the European Union allocated 115 million euros to support preservation efforts. Since then, substantial progress has been made: many monuments have been restored, and previously inaccessible areas are now increasingly open to the public.
Given these improvements, Pompeii has emerged as an exceptional destination for day-long exploration. A professionally guided five-hour tour offers an unparalleled opportunity to immerse oneself in the marvels of this extraordinary Roman archaeological site, promising an experience that is both educational and unforgettable.
THIS POMPEII TOUR ENTAILS EXPLORING A LARGE PART OF THE HISTORIC ROMAN TOWN.
The excavations of Pompeii, which commenced in 1748, have revealed an extensive archaeological site of significant historical value. This site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 and currently stands as the second most visited archaeological destination in Italy, following the Colosseum in Rome.
Ancient Pompeii spans approximately sixty hectares (163 acres) and is encircled by substantial city walls extending over three kilometers and two hundred meters (almost two miles) in length, fortified with twelve watchtowers. The city was accessed through seven confirmed gates, along with an additional gate whose existence remains uncertain.
Following the Roman conquest of Pompeii, the city walls lost their original defensive purpose. However, rather than dismantling them, the residents opted to expand beyond the walls to accommodate the city’s growing population. Evidence of this outward expansion is particularly apparent near the Sea Gate (Porta Marina), where notable structures such as the Suburban Thermal Baths and an Imperial Villa were constructed. Additionally, outside the city limits lie the necropolises and several grand residences, including the Villa of the Mysteries, which underscores the vast scale of ancient Pompeii and the richness of its monuments.
P.N.: This guided tour will focus exclusively on the buildings accessible to the public, offering insight into the remarkable history and architectural splendors of this extraordinary site.
Following the initial three hours of the visit, the guide will organize a twenty-minute break, during which participants may purchase snacks at the local bar located within the ruins or consume any food they have brought along. The guided tour will then continue for an additional two hours.
Please ensure you bring essential items such as a hat, sunscreen, water, and a light lunch or sandwich. It is also recommended to wear comfortable footwear, as the tour involves extensive walking.
P.S.: Along with the entrance ticket to Pompeii, it is mandatory to present your passport.
